People’s Theatre, 2025
Like plants reaching for the sun, we move naturally towards light. We all need hope. We want to believe in goodness, warmth, and connection. That is the energy I want to project in 2025. At a time when the news shows only the darker sides of the world, I am searching for light.
But where do you find that light in the city? For me, it can shine in architecture – in the ways buildings are designed with people in mind.
I draw inspiration from Volksbühne, a well-known theatre next to my studio in Berlin. Built in 1913, rebuilt after the war. The original slogan inscribed on the arch was “Die Kunst dem Volke” (“The art to the people”). Art is for everyone! More than a century later, this theatre continues to radiate liberal energy to those who are around.
I transform my impressions into further abstracted forms, highlighting the details that stay with me: green grass for rest, stairs for gathering, windows for transparency and openness. The sun always seems to shine on the building.
This is the first piece in my new series in 2025. I revisit themes from my earlier practice through vivid colours, structural forms and graphical coils. My imagined architectural constructs suggest ideological spaces, filled with radiant light beams conveyed through the colourful coils. They are playful and evocative. I hope these works offer a spirit of escapism, suggesting human connection and finding hopes of living in 2025.
