In 2023, while working on The Stages of Finding, I came across the book ‘Mark Rothko: From the Inside Out’ by Christopher Rothko. Reading it, I tried to understand how Rothko thought – how space, colour, and light could be used to create an experience rather than simply an image; how emotion could be held rather than illustrated.
When I learned I would be working in residence at the Rothko Museum in Daugavpils, presenting new work for the opening exhibition of the symposium, I felt the connection immediately. I began thinking about what we share: a belief that form, colour, and light can transform feeling; that art can hold something universal without explaining it.
I drew particular inspiration from his work around 1949 – bright colours, multi-form compositions. They were bursting with energy and alive with human spirit. ‘Breath of Life’ was the feeling I carried into making these pieces.
Forms of different sizes come together, shifting in and out, painted flat, never quite staying on the main body. The edges are always blurry, always moving. There is a constant act of breathing in all dimensions, this is what I am exploring.
